Collector’s Vehicle Insurance in France: What You Need to Know

First of all, what is a collector’s vehicle? According to French law, to be designated as a “collection”, a car must be over 30 years old and no longer in production.

It also has a specific registration document: the collector’s registration certificate.

To obtain this certificate, it is necessary to request it from the National Agency for Secure Titles (ANTS) and, in most cases, to first obtain a certificate from the FFVE (French Vehicle Federation). vintage. The technical inspection is valid for 7 years.

The insurer does not have the same criteria

To be accepted as a collector’s car by an insurer, the vehicle is not required to meet the conditions required by law!

The insurer is free to insure any collection vehicle if it meets the criteria it has defined.

The criterion of rarity and a seniority of at least 20 years (vehicle no longer in production with the manufacturer or abandoned type) are sufficient with most insurance companies. You can therefore insure a collection vehicle with a normal registration document.

Some requirements

As with French legislation, the insurer will require the presence of another vehicle for daily use (work trips, shopping, etc.) because the classic vehicle can only be used for leisure purposes.

The insurer also requires that the insured be at least 21 years old and have at least three years of driving experience. Finally, the absence of any recent responsible claim is another prerequisite.

What guarantees for your old one?

As with traditional car insurance, there are third party formulas (civil liability + defense-recourse + assistance), intermediate (or third party plus… with theft and broken glass or all risks.

The guarantees offered are adapted, in the extent of the cover and in the compensation ceilings, to the specificity of collector vehicles (for example: compensation in real value, calculated according to the “collection” rating on the day of the loss).

These packages also include, as an inclusion or option, driver protection and legal protection adapted to the specificities of the car. Zero kilometer assistance is to be expected.

Adapted prices

In addition to the experience necessary to drive an old one (you don’t drive in a car from the 1950s like in the latest Citroën – braking, steering, visibility, driving aids, etc.) the use of this type of vehicle with a registration certificate in collection is legally limited: no professional use, no commuting, no transport of goods.

As usage is limited, the number of kilometers traveled is generally low; the insurer will therefore apply a lower rate to a classic vehicle. As a corollary of this privileged rate, the vehicle is exempt from the bonus-malus clause (art. A121-1 Insurance Code).
