Innovative Musical Circus Project ‘CirqueMusique’ Ends with Spectacular Show in Riga Circus

On February 9, the project “Art laboratory “CirqueMusique”” implemented by Liepaja concert hall “Lielais dzintars” ended in Riga Circus. The newly created musical circus performance for young people “I can’t stand that they eat so loudly” and a documentary film about the progress of the project were presented in a hall full of spectators. The ambitious project has brought together composers, musicians and contemporary circus artists from Latvia and Scandinavia, as well as young people and cultural professionals in four regions of Latvia. The project lasted 17 months, and its activities were implemented thanks to the support of grants from the European Economic Area (EEA), informed the project’s communication manager Andra Strautiņa

The culmination of the project is the musical circus show “I can’t stand that they eat so loudly”, which was created in an experimental and interactive way, involving artists and young people of various disciplines. It tells about the path of personality creation, and in each of the parts of the show, the artists explore relationships in different social groups – with the closest family members and schoolmates, with the characteristic feature of the 21st century – technology and the information overload and social anxiety created by it, and relationships with oneself and your inner world. The involvement of young people in the creative workshops allowed the composers and artists to get ideas for creating a play on topics relevant to this age group and to create a bright and memorable name for the play.

From February 5th to 9th, in the residence in the Riga Circus, performing an intensive co-creation process, the artists together with playwright Anci Muižniec and set designer Pamela Butanis experimented with the most accurate images and movement elements to bring the story to life in music. Not only contemporary music and circus artists “talk” on the stage, but also the expressive visual language created by P. Butāne, in the interplay of two colors, both in the costumes of the artists and in the stage props. The show will be available to a wider audience from April 26, when it will be shown in Liepaja, in the “Lielais dzintars” concert hall. Information about upcoming performances on the website of the concert hall.

The creative team of the show consists of bright composers of their generation – Krists Auznieks, Platons Buravickis, Linda Leimane and Santa Ratniece; musicians from Latvia – violinist Agnese Kanniņa, clarinetist Kārlis Catlaks, bassist Jānis Rubiks, percussionist Elīna Endzele and flautist Liene Dobičina – and circus artists – Norwegian juggler Julian Saether, acrobat Gabriel Skugs, as well as Riga Circus school representatives – juggler Egils Zvejnieks, juggler Elīna Konrad and clown-juggle Mariano Gedvillo. The light and sound design was created by Jurģis Ozols and Jānis Straume.

As mentioned above, the largest part of the “CirqueMusique” project took place in the spring and autumn of 2023 – four creative workshops in Rēzekne, Cēsis, Liepāja and Ventspils. During them, composers, musicians and circus artists, led by the project partner and artistic director Julian Saether, organized interdisciplinary master classes for young people aged 12 to 18. A total of around 180 young people who are learning music or movement art participated in them. In the workshops, budding professionals got acquainted with the world of contemporary music and modern circus, developed the skills necessary for stage performance and gained experience in cooperation with representatives of various art disciplines.

On February 9, guidelines for audience attraction and development, developed by the project partner from Iceland, Greta Clough, were also presented. They are intended for cultural professionals in the regions who work with young audiences on a daily basis. The content of the guidelines was created during four practical seminars that took place simultaneously with the creative workshops, as well as observing the interaction between young people and the creative team of the project and the process of creating the show. The developed guidelines will soon be available to anyone interested on the website of the concert hall.

During the project, a documentary film was also made, which tells about the course of last year’s creative workshops and the experience of the participants in them. The film was made by Gregors Jānis Mažis and can be seen in concert halls on Youtube channel.

More information about the project is available in the concert hall “Lielais dzintars” on the homepage. The project “Art laboratory “CirqueMusique”” receives grants in the amount of 249,972 euros from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway within the EEA grants.
