The Anti-Narcotics Police of Ecuador reported this Monday that they thwarted the shipment by ship of more than a ton of cocaine hidden among mineralized material in a container destined for Finland.
The institution reported that after an inspection of a cargo container in the port city of Guayaquil and with the support of a dog specialized in drug detection, it found the cache hidden under sandy material with a concentration of minerals.
The agents have found a thousand rectangular packages containing cocaine and their total weight corresponded to 1,127 kilos of the illegal substance.
Although it is not considered a cocaine producing country, Ecuador has become in recent years a key step for the trafficking of this drug that is manufactured in Colombia and Peru, its two neighbors identified as among the largest producers of the substance.
The authorities consider that drug trafficking mafias use Ecuadorian ports and coasts to illegally send drugs by sea to the main consumer markets: the United States and Europe.
Ecuador is also considered the third country in the world that seizes the most drugs, only behind Colombia and the United States, as it has annually exceeded 200 tons of narcotics seized in the last three years. EFE
