Rafael Grossi discusses the importance of nuclear energy for the future at the World Government Summit 2024

His Excellency Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said that nuclear energy does not seek to be the dominant energy source in the world, but rather constitutes a stable and organized element within a smart and integrated mixture of energy sources.

This came during a session entitled “Are we moving towards endless sources of energy?”, during which he was interviewed by Becky Anderson, from CNN, as part of the activities of the “World Government Summit 2024”, which Dubai is hosting during the period from 12 to 14 February, under the slogan “ Anticipating the governments of the future.

The UAE is an inspiring model.

The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency said that the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28), which was recently hosted by the UAE, played a decisive role in several aspects, one of which was nuclear energy, where the need to accelerate its use was emphasized.

He added: “The UAE is a role model in this field, as it was able, within a short period of time, to build the necessary capabilities and institutional structures in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Today, nuclear energy constitutes 25% of the total energy used in the country, and according to what I understand from “In my conversations with representatives of the UAE government, there is an intention to increase this effort.”

Long lasting fruits.

Grossi stated that nuclear energy is one of the important tools for reducing carbon levels in the global energy mix, which is why we are seeing increasing investments in China, India, Russia, Egypt and Turkey as well.

He noted that some nuclear projects have faced delays because of problems specific to those projects, not because of fundamental flaws in nuclear technology itself, but rather the broader narrative on nuclear energy must take into account its long-term benefits for energy security and environmental sustainability.

He considered that “the contribution of nuclear energy to a sustainable and flexible energy mix can support global efforts to mitigate climate change into the next century, and this confirms the importance of building energy networks that not only meet immediate climate goals, but also ensure the health and stability of the planet in the long term.”

Grossi noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency has no commercial interests or political agenda, and all that matters to it is doing its job by ensuring that nuclear energy is used properly and safely.

Multiple areas of nuclear technology.

Grossi said that nuclear technology contributes not only to energy production, but also to the fields of medicine, agriculture, and water management, and this highlights its diversity and potential in confronting some of the biggest global challenges.

The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency explained that nuclear technologies play a major role in the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, including cancer, and technologies such as radiopharmaceuticals and radiation therapy are crucial in modern medicine, offering hope and treatments that save the lives of millions around the world.

His Excellency pointed out that nuclear technology works to develop drought-resistant crops, especially in areas exposed to drought and climate change, and also contributes to sustainable agriculture and food security.

He pointed out that nuclear technologies help in water management by evaluating, monitoring and preserving its resources.

Zaporizhya station.

Regarding the Ukrainian Zaporizhya nuclear power plant, Grossi said that the UN agency plays a crucial role in mitigating risks and providing accurate information about it, given its location near the front lines of the ongoing conflict between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

He believed that the agency’s presence there acts as a form of deterrence against further attacks or actions that might jeopardize the safety and security of the nuclear facility. It also works to provide technical support to maintain the safe operation of the station and to limit potential damage due to military actions in the region.

It is noteworthy that the World Government Summit, in its current version, witnesses; More than 4,000 specialists from 140 governments, 85 international organizations, and 700 international companies attended to discuss major global future trends, during more than 110 main dialogue and interactive sessions, in which 200 international figures spoke, in addition to holding more than 23 ministerial meetings and executive sessions attended by more than 300. minister.
