The Democratic-controlled US Senate passed a $95 billion aid bill for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
The bill has now been sent to the Republican-dominated House of Representatives for approval, Reuters reported. The agency adds that there the chances of the document being accepted remain low.
The bill was approved by 70 to 29 votes. 22 Republican senators have supported it as well.
“For years, maybe decades, the Senate has not passed a bill that would have such an impact not only on our national security, not only on the security of our allies, but on the security of Western democracy,” the Senate Democratic Majority Leader said. Chuck Schumer He expressed confidence that the bill would receive equally strong bipartisan support if it were voted on in the House of Representatives.
Reuters recalls that before being signed by President Joe Biden and officially becoming law, the bill must also be voted on by the House of Representatives, but, according to the agency, this will be difficult.
According to the agency, doubts about whether he will be approved by the House controlled by the party of the previous US president are increasing.
The lower house of Congress will not consider the text in its current form, its speaker Mike Johnson made it clear, quoted by France Presse.
He argued that “the Senate’s foreign aid bill remains silent on the most pressing issue facing our own country.” Johnson was referring to the migrant crisis at the United States’ border with Mexico in his statement.
Democratic President Joe Biden has been urging Congress for several months to rush new aid to Ukraine and US partners in the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan. Following the October 7, 2024 Hamas attack on Israel, he also requested funds for the US ally, along with humanitarian aid for the Palestinians in Gaza.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the Senate’s adoption of the bill.
“American aid will bring peace to Ukraine and restore global stability, leading to increased security and prosperity for all Americans and the entire free world,” he said on the X social network.
Ukrainian officials have expressed fears of cutting off military aid that is vital to the country’s ability to fend off a Russian invasion. The US is the largest donor of arms to Ukraine.
