President Joe Biden Creates TikTok Account Ahead of Elections, Raising Concerns

Washington

Ahead of the elections in the United States, President Joe Biden create an account TikTok. Biden’s move to become a TikTok user is an effort to increase the appeal of young voters.

In his first content on Biden’s personal TikTok account @bidenhq which was uploaded on Sunday (11/2), he wrote ‘lol hey guys’. The content looks like this or that content where Biden is asked a question and chooses one answer.

Even though it officially belongs to Biden, the TikTok account is managed by his campaign team as reported detikINET from the Associated Press, Tuesday (13/2/2024).

Several parties, including the US National Security Spokesperson, John Kirby, are worried about the Biden campaign’s new steps ahead of the US Election. He is concerned that Biden’s steps on TikTok could be used as misuse of data and information by foreign parties. This is because Biden is still US President.

Uniquely, Biden had previously signed a law prohibiting US federal government officials from using TikTok in 2022. The White House stated that this ban remained in effect.

“Nothing has changed regarding national security issues, from the perspective of the National Security Council regarding the use of TikTok on government devices. That policy is still in effect,” said Kirby.

In the US, the FBI and the Federal Communications Commission have warned that TikTok, an application made by the Chinese company ByteDance, has the potential to share data with the Chinese government.

Apart from Kirby, this new Biden campaign initiative also received concerns from the Chairman of the US Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner. He is very concerned about Biden’s decision to become a new TikTok user.

Mark actually hopes that TikTok will no longer be able to exist in the US. He used India as an example of a country that has banned TikTok. “I think we still need to find a way to follow India, which has banned TikTok,” said Mark.
