Revolutionary AI Technology for Early Cancer Detection: ICanSearch and LifeSemantics Software

Using generative artificial intelligence (AI), he drew a picture of a researcher making an early diagnosis of cancer with the help of AI. Early detection is very important for cancer, which has the highest mortality rate among GPT4 diseases.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), if cancer is discovered at a late stage, the five-year survival rate is only 6.1%, but if discovered and treated early, the rate soars to 64%.

For this reason, the industry is busy developing and launching products that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to assist medical staff in diagnosing cancer.

According to the ‘Cancer Research Trend Report 2023’ published by the Korean Cancer Society, the number of cancer cases in Korea as of 2020 was 247,952, an increase of 144,896 compared to 2000. In 2020, there are about 2.28 million people who have been diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing treatment or have completed treatment (remission). This means that out of 100 people in Korea, about 4 people have experienced cancer.

The causes of cancer are diverse, including family history, genetics, and incorrect diet and lifestyle habits, but as with other diseases, aging is considered one of the main causes. According to the report, one in ten people over the age of 65 have cancer. Unlike other diseases, cancer has almost no early symptoms such as pain, making early detection difficult. This is why cancer is called a ‘silent killer’.

Therefore, the best way to detect cancer early is to undergo cancer screening provided by the government or workplace.

The government is implementing a national cancer screening project to detect and treat cancer early and lower the cancer mortality rate. Related industries have also stepped up to help detect cancer at an early stage.

GC Genome launched the ‘ICanSearch’ test, which enables early detection and screening of six types of cancer using AI-based liquid biopsy technology.

This test is a cancer screening that can predict the presence and progression of six types of cancer, including lung cancer, liver cancer, colon cancer, pancreaticobiliary cancer, esophageal cancer, and ovarian cancer, with just one blood draw. The company explained that these six types were selected primarily for cancer types that have a high survival rate if discovered early, as well as cancer types that require early cancer screening because there is no existing appropriate early diagnosis method.

iCanSearch utilizes an AI algorithm developed by GC Genome. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) from cancer cells is extracted from cell-free DNA floating in the blood vessels and full-genome analysis is performed using next generation sequencing (NGS). This is analyzed using an AI algorithm to confirm the possibility of cancer.

According to GC Genome, one of the algorithms used in iCanSearch test analysis showed a sensitivity of 91.1% (based on 95% specificity) in stage 1 cancer that is difficult to diagnose, suggesting the possibility that it could be of great help in early cancer detection. .

Ki Chang-seok, CEO of GC Genome, said, “The number of cancer patients is increasing due to the aging population and westernized eating habits, so appropriate early diagnosis is very important.” “It could also help patients who were reluctant to undergo screening,” he said.

LifeSemantics, a medical AI company developing image detection and diagnosis assistance software (SW), is targeting skin cancer. This software was built with learning data on cancers with a high incidence, such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. This software assists medical staff in diagnosis and aids in the early detection of skin cancer.

This is a method of diagnosing skin cancer based on images taken with a smartphone instead of expensive equipment. Another advantage is that it can reduce costs. LifeSemantics’ skin cancer image detection and diagnosis assistance software received approval for a confirmatory clinical trial plan from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in July last year.

Recently, an in-hospital clinical trial was completed. LifeSemantics explained, “Recruiting subjects, securing clinical data, and clinical trials in the hospital proceeded smoothly. We plan to announce the final clinical trial results report (CSR) one by one within this month and expedite the medical device approval process from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.” .

An official from LifeSemantics said, “We will contribute to skin cancer diagnosis by speedily proceeding with medical device licensing and commercialization.” Jang Young-woo, a professor of breast endocrine surgery at Korea University Ansan Hospital, said, “Cancer cells do not stop proliferating, but invade surrounding organs and even metastasize distantly through lymphatic vessels or blood vessels. If detected early, there is no need for difficult chemotherapy and the time and financial burden is reduced.” He emphasized the importance of early detection.
