Dutch households consumed 11 percent less gas last year than in 2022, while winters were comparable in temperature. Declining gas consumption seems to be becoming a trend.
The Netherlands will consume a total of 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2023, reports statistics agency CBS. That is 5 percent less than a year earlier, when gas consumption had fallen by a quarter compared to 2021.
Gas prices have risen sharply since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Although gas prices fell last year, we are still paying more than before the invasion of Ukraine.
To avoid high energy bills, many Dutch households have started to insulate, among other things. As a result, homes have become permanently less dependent on central heating boilers for heat.
A third of households with a wood-burning stove or fireplace also started a fire more often. The Netherlands has 1.2 million households with a wood-burning stove or fireplace.
Buildings such as shops, restaurants and hospitals also reduced their gas consumption, by 7 percent compared to 2022. In industry, gas consumption was 4 percent lower, although developments differ greatly per sector.
