Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland Call for Structural Sexuality Education in Secondary and Vocational Education

Give sexuality education a structural place in secondary education and vocational education. Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland make that call on Monday, in the week that they call Valentine’s Day ‘Week of Love’. According to Manouk Vermeulen of Rutgers, better education can ensure that a “new generation grows up with respect for themselves and for each other”

In recent research by the two organizations, young people gave the information they receive at school about sexuality an average of 5.6. This is a decrease compared to 2017, when the previous survey took place. Young people often feel that there are too few sex education lessons at school. Sexual boundaries and issues such as pleasure during sex are also hardly discussed.

Offering sexuality education

Of Week of Love can be a “starting point” for schools in secondary education, practical education, special education and MBO to offer the theme structurally, says Vermeulen. This year, love week lasts two weeks instead of one: from February 12 to February 23. That’s because of spring break.
