Jakarta – Often, various content about food suddenly appears on your social media feed. Especially when watching food videos at night, it feels more tempting.

Content such as food reviews and mukbangs often arouse the desire to eat without realizing it. Initially, I only watched for entertainment, but eventually I was tempted to overeat because I was lured by content about food.

Reporting from Healthline, Monday, February 12 2024, professor of internal medicine at Yale School of Medicine, dr. Mireille Serlie revealed that some people experience sudden feelings of hunger after watching eating content.

Food content wrapped in the mukbang concept and accompanied by ASMR or tempting sounds actually has a psychological effect on the audience.

“Visual cues of food induce dopamine responses in areas of the brain,” said Dr. Mireille Serlie.

There is a study that shows that visualization of foods high in fat and sugar increases the hormone dopamine much higher when compared to other types of food. This is also influenced by the memory of the taste that has been recorded in the brain when consuming the food.

So just looking at it can trigger memories of the taste of the food. So it is not surprising that after watching this content the body often feels hungry and subconsciously feels fast when eating or experiences an increase in the amount of food intake.

“The intensity of the response predicts the amount of subsequent food intake. “Consuming unhealthy foods repeatedly can affect brain tissue, causing more appetite and higher food intake,” explained Dr. Mireille Serlie.

Psychological techniques like this are often used by food brands to increase sales through advertising on social media. The audience becomes tempted by the visualization of the food they see, then increases their desire to buy and eat it.

In addition, if you see the content of the food you like, this can release a person’s dopamine hormone that creates a feeling of happiness. In addition, social media can also influence the food and lifestyle habits you try.

The more often you are exposed to the type of content with an unhealthy lifestyle, the more this can affect your health condition, and vice versa.

“The content of junk food can activate the dopamine system in the brain, resulting in feelings of pleasure,” he said.
