Bawaslu Intervenes in Kaesang Pangarep’s Social Media Activities During Election Quiet Period

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Indonesian Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) intervened regarding the actions of President Joko Widodo’s youngest son who is the General Chair of PSI, Kaesang Pangarep, on social media during the quiet period, Sunday (11/2/2024).

Kaesang, through his official account on Instagram, uploaded photos of the campaign activities of the party bearing the rose symbol in many areas, namely Solo, Kediri, Deli Serdang, South Tangerang and Bekasi.

The post, which included a photo of a simulation of Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming’s vote on the 2024 presidential election ballot paper, was accompanied by an implicit invitation to vote for PSI: come on, let’s have a Rose Garden all over Indonesia.

Bawaslu also admitted that they would immediately act after receiving information about Kaesang’s upload.

“Thank you for the information. We will immediately carry out an investigation,” said the Coordinator of the Prevention, Community Participation and Public Relations Division of Bawaslu RI, Lolly Suhenty, to Kompas.com on Monday (12/2/2024).

“Whether it’s permissible or not, of course we will check the regulatory provisions, including the article prohibiting broadcasting during quiet periods,” he continued.

For your information, a number of prohibitions on broadcasting during the quiet period are regulated in Article 287 of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections (Election Law) and Article 56 of KPU Regulation Number 15 of 2023 concerning Campaigns.

“During the calm period, print mass media, online media, social media and broadcasting institutions are prohibited from broadcasting news, advertisements, track records or other forms that lead to election campaign interests that benefit or harm election participants,” explained Lolly, citing the regulation.
