Minister of the Interior Confident of Compromise on Gibraltar Treaty: Europa Sur Interview

Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Minister of the Interior, in an interview given to the newspaper Europa Sur, on the occasion of his visit to the region, has expressed confidence that a compromise will be reached for the Treaty on Gibraltar: “There has to be an agreement and it will be to be there, necessarily. Above all, it must be for the benefit of the citizens, especially of Campo de Gibraltar and La Línea de la Concepción, in particular, and also of the Gibraltarians. Our goal is for coexistence to remain as it is until now, stable. There are 15,000 citizens who go to Gibraltar to work and return every day. We must guarantee the coexistence and work of these fellow citizens,” he assures.

When asked if the United Kingdom has asked the Interior to allow its citizens to enter through the Gate without meeting the requirements demanded of those from third countries, the minister responds: “Everything is done within the strict framework of the law, it is a principle unwavering”.

“But is there such a request? Do the British enter Spain through Gibraltar with different requirements?

And the minister responds again: “Everything is done within the strict framework of legality, in compliance with the law.”

Separately, officials from the Independent Monitoring Authority for Citizens’ Rights Agreements (IMA) visited Gibraltar, without prior appointment, last week.

The IMA is an independent British body which, post-Brexit, is responsible for ensuring that the rights of citizens from territories outside Great Britain residing in the United Kingdom and Gibraltar are respected.

“Under the Withdrawal Agreement, EU citizens who have obtained rights in the United Kingdom and Gibraltar under EU law before the end of the Brexit transition period on 31 December 2020 have those rights safeguarded. and preserved. The agreement offered similar protection to British citizens, including those of Gibraltar, who derived rights under EU law in EU Member States,” explains The Gibraltar Chronicle, which includes statements with its executive director, Miranda Biddle.

«There are many people in Gibraltar who remember what it was like when the border was completely closed. So it is a topic of live conversation,” he assured that medium.

During the visit, the IMA team met with Chief Minister Fabián Picardo, Attorney General Michael Llamas, Leader of the Opposition Keith Azopardi and Director General of the Gibraltar Health Authority, GHA, Kevin McGee, and the Citizens Advice Office.
