Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
The leader Hamas in Gaza warned that Israeli military operations in Rafah could result in tens of thousands of casualties in the city. Because Hamas considers Rafah to be the last refuge for Palestinian refugees.
Rafah is already overcrowded with Gaza refugees. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously planned for his military to attack Rafah.
Netanyahu told Israeli military and security officials late Friday to submit to the cabinet a joint plan to evacuate residents and destroy Hamas battalions south of the city.
Netanyahu’s promise of a safe route was met with skepticism, as people fleeing previous battle zones remained under attack by the Israeli military.
Like The New ArabHamas said in a statement that any military action would have a catastrophic impact that could lead to tens of thousands of people being martyred and injured if Rafah is stormed.
The United States Department of State said it did not support a ground attack on Rafah. The US also warned that, if not properly planned, such operations risked disaster.
Israel’s brutal bombardment of the Gaza Strip has killed more than 28 people since October 7 2023, with the majority of victims being women and children.
Previously, the Israeli military claimed on Saturday (10/2) that they had discovered a Hamas tunnel under the headquarters of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza City.
UNRWA responded that it had not operated from the base since 12 October, and called for an independent investigation.
Hamas has previously denied Israeli claims that it has dug a vast network of tunnels under schools, hospitals and other civilian infrastructure to cover up its activities.
