The Los Angeles Lakers have made a significant addition to their roster by signing free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie. The announcement was made by Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka. Dinwiddie, a Los Angeles native, brings his talents back to his hometown after a successful stint with the Brooklyn Nets.
Dinwiddie, standing at 6’5″ and weighing 212 pounds, has been a key contributor for the Nets this season. In 48 games, all of which he started, he has averaged 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in 30.7 minutes of play. These numbers highlight his versatility and ability to impact the game on multiple fronts.
With over nine seasons of NBA experience, Dinwiddie has played for several teams including the Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, and Detroit Pistons. Throughout his career, he has maintained solid averages of 13.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 28.0 minutes per game. This consistency and production make him a valuable asset for any team.
Dinwiddie has also showcased his skills in the postseason, having competed in 28 playoff games. During these appearances, he has averaged 14.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 28.3 minutes. His shooting percentages of 42.5 percent from the field, 40.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 77.7 percent from the free-throw line demonstrate his efficiency and ability to perform under pressure.
Rob Pelinka expressed his excitement about Dinwiddie’s return to Los Angeles, stating, “Spencer is returning to his roots and the city where his journey began… We are thrilled for him to wear the iconic Lakers uniform in front of his family and friends.” Pelinka also highlighted Dinwiddie’s play-making abilities and aggressiveness, which will provide valuable depth to the Lakers’ roster as they continue their push towards the latter half of the season.
Dinwiddie’s basketball journey started at William Howard Taft High School in Los Angeles, where he was named the John R. Wooden California High School Player of the Year in 2011. He then went on to play three collegiate seasons at the University of Colorado before being selected as the 38th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons.
As he joins the Lakers, Dinwiddie will don jersey number 26 for the purple and gold. This signing not only strengthens the Lakers’ roster but also brings a hometown hero back to Los Angeles. With his experience, skill set, and determination, Dinwiddie is poised to make a significant impact as the Lakers continue their pursuit of success.
