Two days closed. Right in the heart of the season. While the comfort of heavy snowfalls arrived from the sky (over 60 centimeters at an altitude of 1,500 metres, over 80 at an altitude of two thousand metres), the Colere plants they had to stop due to a fault in the power line.A bad blow for the Scalvina ski resort, completely renovated a few months ago, and which is running on good numbers. «In the last period we have had an average of 500 visitors per day on weekdays and 1,800 per day on holidays» report the managers. After closing on Friday due to bad weather, the ski lifts remained closed on Saturday and Sunday due to a fault in the power lines, which left the entire area, including the mountain refuges, without an energy supply.
The damage
«Already a month ago we reported that a power cable in the Cima Bianca area (in the upper part of the lifts) had unrolled and torn – explain the managers of the area -. E-Distribuzione informed us that the renovation work would take place next summer. In the meantime, however, the snow of recent days has weighed down the already damaged cables, which have torn completely.” They stayed that way without power chairlifts and refuges, but not only. «The whole country was left without telephone lines, because the antennas are located at high altitude. Luckily we are served by fiber optics, so we have active switchboards and internet.”
The repair
It was not possible to carry out the repair work immediately: «The heavy snowfall in progress caused the formation of large sleeves of ice which, by breaking off and falling to the ground, caused damage to one of the line conductors – explain the representatives by Enel -. The staff of E-Distribuzione, the Enel group company that manages the medium and low voltage network, has not yet managed to resolve the critical situation. The company that intervened this morning (yesterday, ed.) was unable to gain access due to the heavy presence of snow. At the moment therefore there are no quick recovery forecasts given that snow is still expected at high altitude.” The managers remain sorry for the days lost. “We had reported the problem several times: by postponing the intervention they forced us to close right on the Carnival weekend.”
The reopening
As soon as the power returns, the forecast is to have the entire area open, including the Italia slope, the most awaited by snow lovers. «With the snow in recent hours we are already certain that we will be able to open it. There remains a doubt only for the return track, the direct Carbonera route, for which we will have to check how much snow remains”. Meanwhile, “we have no certainties but we hope to be able to reopen on Monday (tomorrow, ed.)”. The shuttle service will also continue to connect the town to the departure of the cable car in Carbonera. «On holidays we have two shuttles active from 8.30. Parking lots are indicated in the town (one paid and the others free), which are managed by some parking attendants to optimize the space. The free shuttle service can also be used by those who live or are staying in the town, so as to reach the slopes without taking the car.”
