Tragedy struck on Friday afternoon when a small airplane collided with a vehicle on Interstate 75 in Collier County, Florida, resulting in a fiery crash. The aircraft, carrying five people from The Ohio State University’s airport, crashed into a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2023 Nissan Armada SUV, causing a devastating debris field and forcing the closure of the interstate. Sadly, two individuals lost their lives in the collision: pilot Edward Daniel Murphy, 50, and co-pilot Ian Frederick Hofmann, 65. The occupants of the damaged vehicles all survived, with only minor injuries reported.
The incident was witnessed by Jinny Johnson, a Naples-area resident who happened upon the crash shortly after it occurred. She described seeing black smoke billowing into the air and flames engulfing the plane. Emergency vehicles had yet to arrive at the scene, but Johnson witnessed a helicopter landing near the wreckage. As she cautiously made her way past the site, she noticed a first responder attending to someone who had been in the car that was struck.
Naples Airport quickly dispatched firetrucks equipped with a special foam-type substance used to control jet fuel fires. As firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, the smoke gradually changed from black to gray and then to white. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the aircraft involved in the crash was a Bombardier Challenger 600 jet, which had been traveling from Columbus, Ohio to Naples Airport before its scheduled departure to Fort Lauderdale.
According to Robin King, the director of communication with The Naples Airport Authority, the plane lost communication with the airport just prior to the crash. The pilot’s final call indicated that both engines had failed, prompting an emergency landing attempt. Unfortunately, they were unable to reach the runway. The airport had no information regarding who was on board the aircraft or the purpose of their visit to Naples.
In response to the incident, the Hop-a-Jet charter company, which leased the aircraft involved in the crash, released a statement expressing concern for the well-being of the passengers, crew members, and their families. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. An NTSB investigator arrived at the crash site on Friday, with additional team members expected to join the investigation.
As the investigation continues, southbound lanes of Interstate 75 remain closed. Florida Highway Patrol troopers have advised drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The FAA has also restricted airspace around the crash site. Meanwhile, officials at The Ohio State University clarified that the Columbus airport is fully commercial and that the plane involved in the crash was not affiliated with the university.
