Farmers Block Access to Colruyt Supermarkets in Protest Against Meat Price Increase

A handful of farmers and their tractors are stationed at the entrance gates of the Colruyt supermarkets in Hannuit and Waremme, in the province of Liège. Belga determined this on site on Saturday afternoon.

The two Colruyt supermarkets in Haspengouw have been completely inaccessible, in Borgworm since Saturday morning and in Hannuit since mid-Saturday afternoon.

“The farmers gathered here around 3.30 pm and did not allow anyone to enter. The demonstrators announced that the action would last until 8 p.m., our closing time,” said a store manager in Hannut. The customers present were able to leave the store without incident. But afterwards no one could enter the site.

The Hannut Federation of Young Farmers (FJA) joined forces with Borgworm to carry out the action. “We would like to express our dissatisfaction, especially about Colruyt’s announcement to increase the meat price from 1.50 euros per kilo by barely 50 cents for the farmer. That is fooling us,” says farmer Raoul Sale.

In recent weeks, farmers throughout Belgium, but also in Europe, have held numerous actions to express their dissatisfaction. Several distribution centers were blocked, leading to supply problems in stores.
