Invasive Alligator Snapping Turtle Discovered in UK Lake
In a surprising turn of events, a fearsome alligator snapping turtle, native to Florida, was discovered in the tranquil county of Cumbria in the northwest United Kingdom. These carnivorous turtles have complex needs and an insatiable appetite, making them challenging pets for inexperienced owners.
The alligator snapping turtle, aptly named Fluffy by the veterinary center caring for it, will soon find a new home in either a zoo or with a private keeper. Until then, it will receive the necessary care and attention it requires.
While these turtles may seem like relics from a bygone era, they are not immune to the threats facing their species. Habitat degradation and overharvesting for their meat have led to a decline in their numbers, according to the National Wildlife Federation. Although they are not currently classified as endangered, some states have implemented bans on collecting them from the wild.
