ABV CULTURAL SALON presented the book “Reflections” by academician Vasil Sgurev – 2024-02-10 23:12:53

/ world today news/ CULTURAL SALON ABV presented the book “Reflections” by academician Vasil Sgurev. The publication is an essay on the activities of Omar Khayyam, born in the lands of today’s Iran, as a man of exact sciences and his contribution to their development – solving a cubic equation, creating an accurate calendar, philosophical understanding of reality and others. The second part of the book presents quatrains about modernity. The guest of the event was the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sofia, H.E. Alireza Irvash – heir to the people of ancient Persia, where Omar Khayyam was born.

The book consists of two parts. In the first, under the modest title “Touching Khayyam”, Academician Sgurev makes a short but very insightful review of the life of Omar Khayyam, who lived eight hundred years ago – a scientist, mathematician, astronomer, philosopher and poet. He is the author of numerous treatises, which became known to the European public only in the middle of the 19th century, when some of his scientific writings and his famous rubai were translated, said Prof. Ivan Granitski, who presented the publication.

Our ancestors – the Orphics and the Pythagoreans, knew already 2500 years ago that truth can be achieved not so much through reason as through intuition and insight. It is about truth in the highest philosophical sense of the word, that is why they searched for its magnetically attractive and radiant face through mathematics, geometry, astronomy, grammar, alchemy, etc. But they were convinced that it was through poetry, through the Word, that they could to reach the vast spaces and multi-functional meanings of truth.
Therefore, it is no coincidence that one of the great modern scientists – Academician Vasil Sgurev, known for his deep scientific interests in the field of stochastic methods for modeling and choosing solutions for complex systems, an internationally renowned computer scientist, reaches for poetry. And to such a rare and difficult genre as rubai”.

ACad. Vasil Sgurev has been captivated by the poetry of Omar Khayyam since his early years. He noted his diverse achievements 800 years ago in mathematics, philosophy, astronomy, medicine, regardless of the fact that in modern times he is known mostly as a poet.

The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sofia H.E. Alireza Irvash pointed out Khayam’s enormous contribution to world education and culture, but highlighted the paradox that his poetry became known 100 years after his death, since his chroniclers speak of him mainly as a sage and scholar. “What I get as a message from Omar Khayyam is that in life we should always be cheerful. In different words, he says – use everything you have to live well“, the ambassador also said. On the eve of the bright Christian holiday H.E. Alireza Irvash received a calendar for the year 2024 with reproductions of beautiful Orthodox icons as a gift from the chairman of ABV Rumen Petkov.
