The Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested Denis Azarov, a businessman, ex-general director of two large coal mines in the Rostov region – Obukhovskaya and Donskoy Anthracite, the press service of the capital’s courts of general jurisdiction reports.
“A preventive measure was chosen against Denis Gennadievich Azarov in the form of detention for a period of 2 months, until April 8, 2024,” the publication says.
He is accused of abuse of power (Part 2 of Article 201 of the Criminal Code) and fraud (Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code). The first article is punishable by up to ten years in prison, the second – up to two years in prison.
In January the President Vladimir Putin approved the sale of the Obukhovskaya Mine Management and Donskoy Anthracite, which previously belonged to a Ukrainian businessman Rynat Akhmetov (Fabcell limited), Russian company “Best Solution”.
According to RBC, at the end of 2021, Obukhovskaya Mine Management received revenue of 13.06 billion rubles, profit – 2 billion rubles, and for 2022 – a loss of 7.81 billion rubles. The revenue of Donskoy Anthracite in 2022 amounted to 34.56 million rubles, in 2021 – 65.52 million rubles, in 2020 – 51.33 million rubles.
