Imprisoned Pakistani PM Khan Claims Victory with AI Message: Power Struggle Ensues

XKhan’s AI message

Pakistani former Prime Minister Khan, like his rival Sharif, has claimed victory in the parliamentary elections in Pakistan. Because he is in prison, he did this with an AI message via X.

“I had faith in you. The huge turnout has shocked everyone. No one can stop us,” was the message in Khan’s simulated voice to his supporters. “Don’t be afraid. Celebrate this.”

With 90 percent of the votes counted, Khan’s supporters have 98 seats in parliament. However, because his party PTI was not allowed by the Supreme Court to participate in the elections, they are all considered independent members of parliament. According to the constitution, they cannot form a government on their own.

This makes Sharif’s PML-N officially the largest party with 67 seats. “Now that we have been given this mandate, we will form a government to get Pakistan out of the chaos,” he promised. He has instructed his brother to find coalition partners, such as the PPI, which became the third party with 51 seats.

Khan says it is a shame that Sharif already assumes he will become prime minister. “No Pakistani will accept this,” he said in his AI message, which according to his X account is his official response.

It is unclear how this power struggle will proceed. It is clear that the army will play an important role, even if only in the background. The military has a lot of influence over the country’s governance and most analysts believe that the military wants Sharif back in power.

Convicted three times

In the run-up to the elections, the 71-year-old Khan was sentenced to years in prison three times for leaking state secrets, corruption and an illegal marriage. He himself speaks of a political witch hunt.

Violence surrounding the elections has so far claimed the lives of more than 25 people. The EU has called on Pakistan to investigate allegations of election fraud and sabotage.
