No Cases of Measles Recorded in Sonora in 2023: Epidemiological Bulletin

During 2023, no cases of measles were recorded in Sonora, this according to data from the Epidemiological Bulletin of the Ministry of Health in the entity (SSA), however, a national notice was recently issued for the population and hospital units of the country. to identify probable cases of this condition.

On this topic, Jorge Rubén Bejar Cornejo explained that measles is a viral disease, with sporadic epidemic outbreaks that are usually minimized “thanks to the country’s successful vaccination campaigns.”

The general director of the General Hospital of the State of Sonora explained that these outbreaks usually occur because people do not comply with the vaccination schedule that corresponds to their children since, “at least a critical mass of 80% of the herd must be immune”, even so, infections occur.

“The measles vaccine is part of the basic scheme, but (unfortunately) part of the population has taken it upon themselves to discourage people from carrying out this practice, mainly through social networks,” he said.

In that sense, he said the call is to parents and guardians to complete the vaccination schedule for their children. The application of the biological against this disease is from 12 months from birth and, subsequently, at 6 months a booster is applied, this in accordance with the national vaccination campaign.

He added that, currently, the state has enough vaccines, both in the health system and in the private sector, so accessing this biological is easy.

On the other hand, Bejar Cornejo also explained that, unlike measles, which usually has sporadic outbreaks, smallpox is an exanthematic disease eradicated from humanity in the 1980s, thanks to vaccination schemes.

Regarding the epidemiological warning, the Ministry of Health said that, within the recommendations of the epidemiological surveillance system, it is requested that vaccination be reinforced in municipalities of the country that have transit of migrant population, as well as in the border areas of the national territory.

Likewise, the federal agency reported that, from 2021 to December 2023, no confirmed cases of measles were reported nationwide.

And on January 29, a measles epidemiological alert was issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), this for the region of the Americas due to the increase in cases at a global level and the occurrence of imported cases.

In the first week of February of this year, a total of 140 possible cases of measles or rubella have been reported, so far without being confirmed.
