NITRA – During his career, he achieved successes that fans in Slovakia will never forget. However, sport also showed him the other side when he had to defend his name due to a doping case. Today, one of the best athletes in Slovak history – Matej Tóth – is celebrating his 41st birthday.
Matej Tóth was born on February 10, 1983 in Nitra. It was there that his sporting steps began, thanks to which he became one of the most successful athletes in our history. He started doing athletics at the age of thirteen, but he had to wait for his greatest achievements.

One of them came to the World Championships in Athletics, which were held in China in 2015. On the 50-kilometer track, he achieved a historic success when he won the gold medal. A year later, the pinnacle of his career came, when he won gold again from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, thus winning Slovakia’s first ever athletics medal from this event.
However, a year after his success came a huge shock. Due to irregularities in his biological passport, which can mean a doping offense, his activity was stopped and one of the most difficult periods of his life began.
His family, led by his wife Lenka, was a big support for him. They said their “yes” to her in 2007 and in the same year they had a daughter, Ema, who was joined by a sister, Nina, in 2009. After more than half a year since the accusations, it finally turned out that our elite athlete did not break the rules and the International Athletics Association definitively cleared Tóth.
In addition to his sports career, he also impressed with his charitable activities and is currently the director of the Dukla Banská Bystrica Military Sports Center.
