The Future of Super Bowl: Television vs. Streaming – What Will Reign in 2024?

Streaming or television for the 2024 Super Bowl?

“The widespread appeal of NFL content, coupled with the growing variety of ways audiences use it, highlights the shift toward streaming that is beginning to occur in sports programming. In December 2022, for example, streaming had grown to represent more than 38% of total television use,” says the report .

However, even though television remains one of the favorite media to watch Super Sunday, seasonal games are seen more on streaming options.

“Audiences are constantly shifting to smart TVs and internet-connected devices for regular season games. “This trend is likely to accelerate next season when NFL Sunday Ticket arrives on YouTube TV,” Nielsen noted.

By the numbers, half of American consumers who watched the Super Bowl last year tuned in through a cable box or antenna, but that number is down 18% from the previous year. On the other hand, Super Bowl viewership on smart TVs and devices such as phones and laptops through streaming services increased by 75% and 57%, respectively.

The same trend is evident in the way NFL fans view the regular season. This year, 55% watched through a set-top box or antenna, 16% watched on a smart TV, and 13% watched regular season games on other internet-connected devices. Last year, those numbers were 61%, 12% and 11%, respectively, and 70%, 8% and 7% the year before.

Viewer behaviors and fan levels aside, NFL content, particularly the Super Bowl, is among the highest-performing programs on television. And as sports begin to migrate to new platforms and services, viewing figures – across all devices and platforms – serve as proof that viewers will continue to watch their sports on TV, but now with streaming.
