German Donations Council Reports Almost Five Billion Euros in Donations for 2023 – North Rhine-Westphalia Leads with One Billion Euros

Bielefeld. The 71 organizations that are members of the German Donations Council received almost five billion euros in donations in 2023. These include large institutions that are based in East Westphalia-Lippe, such as the Bodelwickelhsche Stiftungen Bethel, the Evangelische Johanneswerk or the Eben Foundation Ezer. “I’m most pleased that North Rhine-Westphalia has shot the bird,” says lawyer Wolfgang Stückmann from Lemgo, chairman of the donation council, commenting on the fact that North Rhine-Westphalia donated around one billion euros, the highest amount of all 16 federal states. This has now happened for the fourth time in a row, as stated in the donation council’s report.

However, it is also true that the total donation amount was around twelve percent lower than the year before. “Despite the decline, one must remember: the people in Germany are a nation of donors, and that still applies,” says Ulrich Pohl, deputy chairman of the German Donations Council and chairman of the board of the von Bodelwickelhsche Stiftungen Bethel, when asked by this editorial team. With the sum of around five billion euros “a lot of good can be achieved”.

“Even small donations can make a big difference”

It is gratifying, Pohl continued, “that people in North Rhine-Westphalia are so happy to donate and have an eye for those who are worse off in life.” It is understandable that many people can only donate when they are older. “For example, anyone who is just starting a family or has to service a loan often has to calculate exactly what is possible.” With this sentence, Pohl comments on the fact that, according to the Donation Council’s surveys, the 60+ generation donates the most money. According to the information, their share of the total donation volume will remain unchanged at 61 percent in 2023.

“Nevertheless, I am pleased that so many young people are helping and supporting,” emphasizes Pohl. “Even small donations can have a big impact.” A total of 17 million donors gave an average of 40.30 euros each, as the report states. “This amount represents the third highest amount since 2005.”
