French Cinema in New York 2024: Full Festival Lineup & Events

The programming for this 29th edition will once again demonstrate all the verve, creativity and depth of contemporary French cinema in a variety of genres.

According to Florence Almoziniartistic director of Film at Lincoln Center, “this edition’s impressive lineup highlights a large number of French talents, and presents promising new directors who are making their mark with their first or second feature film, and welcomes seasoned filmmakers eager to present their latest work to audiences new -york.”

The festival is particularly proud to present four first films directed by four young directors, Victoria Musiedlak, Ramata-Toulaye Sy, Iris Kaltenbäck and Nora El Hourch. More than half of the films scheduled this year were directed by women.

The opening evening will be devoted to Thomas Cailley, who will present his film The Animal Kingdom. A film praised by Daniela Elstner, General Director of Unifrance. “This remarkable film, as well as this year’s selection, are excellent examples of the vitality and diversity of French cinema today. This programming, like the recognition of Anatomie d’une fall at the Oscars, underlines what French cinema represents for American audiences today: an alternative voice and a vision of human relationships and world problems.”

They will be in New York for the 2024 Rendezvous (list under reserves): Thomas Cailley, Delphine Deloget, Marie Amachoukeli, Pascal Bonitzer, Ramata-Toulaye Sy, Vanessa Filho, Victoria Musiedlak, Ladj Ly, Valerie Donzelli, Mona Achache, Marion Cotillard, Anna Novion, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Nicolas Philibert, Iris Kaltenbäck, Thomas Lilti, Robin Campillo, Nora El Hourch, Helena Klotz, Nathan Ambrosioni, Erwan Le Duc.

Meetings

A meeting between Thomas Cailley, director of the film The Animal Kingdom, and the Franco-American screenwriter and director Sophie Barthes (Âmes en stockMadame BovaryThe Pod Generation) was organized on the first day of the festival.

A round table, in partnership with French In Motion and The Gotham Film & Media Institute, was organized in the presence ofAgnès Valléeproducer of Thomas Lilti (whose A serious profession will be presented during the Rendez-Vous), Justin Taurand (producer of The Silver Venus) Yoni Golijov (producer of the documentary by Laura Poitras All the beauty and bloodshedwinner of the Golden Lion in Venice in 2022), and Nikkia Moulterie (producer of the film Nannynotably selected at the Toronto Festival in 2022).

Professional day

A professional day will be organized on March 1 to facilitate meetings between French sellers and producers on one side and American distributors and programmers on the other. The day will start with a presentation session, by a dozen international sellers, of their upcoming French films and will be followed by a networking lunch. In the afternoon, French professionals will be able to participate in a panel on the state of the American market and the distribution of French and international films in the United States with representatives from Neon, IFC, Film Forum and the film agency PR Trackshot.

Prize list and school sessions

The vote for the fifth edition of Audience Award will be open to all film buffs present at the festival. And a jury made up of six cinema and French studies students, from higher education establishments in New York, will choose their first or second favorite film for the Best Emerging Filmmaker Award. These two prizes will be announced shortly after the festival closes.

In order to encourage the arrival of a young and student audience, six masterclasses from French filmmakers present at the Rendez-Vous will take place in prestigious universities in New York (Columbia University, NYU, Hunter College, Fordham University…).
Finally, many students from schools in the region will be invited to attend free screenings of Toni, en famille, A serious profession, and Nicolas Philibert’s documentary Being and Having (2002).
