Dubai United Arab Emirates (CNN)– Activists circulated clips and summaries on social media Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interview with American broadcaster Tucker Carlson In the Russian capital, Moscow, there was widespread interaction over some of the statements he made.
Carlson’s first question about why Russia invaded Ukraine prompted a 30-minute retaliatory lecture on the history of Russia and Ukraine, before he repeated his talking points about NATO expansion and what he called the “denazification” of Ukraine as justification for his brutal war.
“Putin successfully provoked Tucker Carlson,” said former CNN Moscow bureau chief Jill Dougherty. “I expected the opposite. I expected a lot of energy from Carlson, and he never asked the questions you might have to ask, especially regarding war.” “The transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, people who have been arrested in Russia now, people who left Russia because of the war… There are many questions that could have been asked but were never asked.”
Regarding relations with the United States, Putin said that he had not spoken with President Joe Biden since before the war in February 2022, but added that Moscow and Washington had “certain contacts” going on, to which Putin responded: “I cannot remember when I spoke to him (Biden). )… But why should I remember everything? I have a lot of my own things to do. We have internal political affairs,” he said, adding that Biden had made a “huge mistake of historic proportions” by supporting Ukraine.
The Russian President denied that Moscow had expansionist ambitions and continued occupation of sovereign Ukrainian lands, and said that Russia had no interest in attacking Poland, Latvia, or other European countries. He dismissed such claims as “mere threat mongering,” according to a translation provided by Carlson.
Putin also appeared to reject the use of tactical nuclear weapons, suggesting that the idea was raised by Western leaders “to extort additional money from American and European taxpayers.”
The Russian President indicated that the path to ending the war in Ukraine passes through direct negotiations between Washington and Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously rejected suggestions that the time has come to negotiate peace with the Kremlin and has repeatedly said he will not give up Ukrainian territory. “When you want to reach a settlement or a dialogue with someone, you can’t do it with a liar,” he told CNN in September.
It is noteworthy that Carlson (the former American Fox network broadcaster) was widely criticized before the interview was broadcast due to fears that it would give Putin an outlet for his propaganda points.
