Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: PlayStation 5 Demo Review and Piano Minigame Impressions

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth It’s almost here, and its demo gives a taste of what we’ll be playing on PlayStation 5 on February 29th. The demo version of the game goes through a short mission, which shows how Sephiroth became the villain of the story. Everything is very beautiful, and from the first moment it is clear that the complete game will have a great impact. But what caught my attention the most was… a piano minigame.

In the demo’s opening sequence, Cloud can explore Nibelheim and enter some houses. At the Lockhart residence, Tifa’s family, Cloud finds a piano and starts playing it. The game explains how the minigame works and, suddenly, you’re getting emotional with a poorly played version of Tifa’s Theme.

I’ve always been horrible at rhythm games. I could barely get past Medium difficulty back in my Guitar Hero days, and the closest I came to being good was in more playful games, like Sayonara Wild Hearts.

In Rebirth, the piano minigame is very simple, although it still requires some coordination. The first notes came out a little weird, but once I got the hang of it, I didn’t want to stop.

It’s nothing new that Final Fantasy VII’s soundtrack is wonderful, ever since the PlayStation version in 1997. Even without having played the original game, One Winged Angel has always been a familiar song, as has the Victory Theme. For some reason, Tifa’s Theme had never caught my attention so much, and playing it on the DualSense reminded me of the incredible work that Nobuo Uematsu did.

I spent a long time playing Tifa’s Theme over and over again, trying to get 100% of the notes (I didn’t achieve it). Even with the lack of skill, it’s clear that this minigame is a great tribute to Uematsu, but there’s more.

It is possible to play the entire piano, without getting caught up in the notes of the songs, using the DualSense. The mechanics are already a lot more difficult, but I can’t wait to see what players will be able to accomplish with the piano in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
