Man Dies from Blood Clot After $42,000 Rolex Theft in New York’s Fashion District

Tobias Savice died of a blood clot after being shot in the ankle when his $42,000 Rolex watch was stolen in New York’s Fashion District.an area famous for hosting fabric stores and clothing factories and for low crime, according to NYPD statistics.

Savice was a amateur rapperwas 35 years old and died a month after being shot on the afternoon of January 6 while visited his tailor in Midtown Manhattan, he said Daily News.

Two ex-convicts were arrested for shooting him and could now be charged with murder if it is determined that the fatal blood clot was caused by the gunshot wound, authorities said. The initial autopsy was inconclusive and further tests are being performed, said a spokeswoman for the city’s Forensic Medicine (OCME).

Richard Johnson, 34, was arrested Jan. 27 and charged with robbery and assault. A second suspect, Jarel Moore (38), was arrested on Monday, February 5, on the same charges.

Savice had gone to the Fashion District to have his pants mended and was waiting in a hallway to enter his tailor in West 38 St. near 8th Avenue on January 6 when the robbers attacked, police said.

As he left the elevator, a couple of criminals jumped on him, shot him in the ankle, They snatched the expensive Rolex from his wrist and fled. Part of the theft was captured by the elevator’s surveillance camera, building employees said.

The panicked workers tried to cover the bloody wound with pieces of cloth. Paramedics took Savice to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition and he was hospitalized for about a weekfriends and family said.

“He seemed normal, in good spirits, all that,” said a friend who spoke to Savice about 10 days before his death. “It sounded good, it felt good. He was discharged (and) was at home resting, preparing to do his physical therapy.” But he developed a blood clot and died on Sunday, February 4, almost a month after the shooting.

Both suspects have served prison sentences. Johnson has multiple prior arrests and was released on parole in December 2016 after serving more than three years in state prison for an upstate drug conviction, records show. Before that, he served more than three years for a robbery in Manhattan and was paroled in July 2013.

For his part, Moore has about a dozen previous arrests. He was released on parole in January 2023 after serving six years for drug trafficking in Manhattan. Before that he was also paroled in November 2009 following a robbery and assault conviction in Brooklyn for which he was sentenced to three and a half years.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
