According to the company’s latest financial report, the Nintendo Switch has become their best-selling console in Japan ever. The Switch is also on track to overtake the Playstation 2 when it comes to the number of units sold during its lifetime.
Since Nintendo launched the Switch hybrid console in 2017, it has sold 33.34 million copies in Japan. This means that the console sold more copies on its home turf than the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. The Switch also continues to impress, slowly but surely closing in on the Playstation 2 when it comes to the number of units sold globally over its lifetime.
Sony’s Playstation 2 was a real force of nature when it got going. The console sold around 155 million copies during the 13 years the device was produced. However, the Nintendo Switch is not far from this massive milestone with a total of 139.36 million copies sold.
Sales of Switch units have stagnated somewhat over the past few years, although they still represent decent annual sales. Nintendo’s main focus during the financial year 2024-2025 should continue to be the Switch and not its sequel many expect to be unveiled in the spring.
Nintendo’s continued focus on the Switch for at least a year paves the way for the console to eventually overtake Sony’s Playstation 2 before Nintendo feels compelled to launch a sequel.
