In conversation with Univision 41, Bronx County President Vanessa L. Gibson referred to the affordable housing program and the need to build more homes for the community.
“Many families have housing problems, this is unacceptable. We have some of the highest eviction rates in New York,” he said.
However, he assured that he is working on an “ambitious plan”, led by Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul.
“We have to build more affordable housing, be excellent at it, for families, retirees, veterans (…) And use protective programs for those who are below the poverty level,” he analyzed.
The president of the Bronx says she believes in “restorative justice”
Regarding the crime experienced in the county, he acknowledged that “many families do not feel safe.” However, he expressed respect toward the New York Police Department.
“We must have partnerships with the police, but also credible messages, investments in young people, with programs, jobs, recreation centers and focusing on what we know can lead people down a bad path,” said Vanessa Gibson.
He stated that he believes in “repetitive justice,” in addition to supervised release programs, that is, alternatives that can give young adults a path to recovery and reintegrate them into society.
“We have to have an equitable justice system that recognizes that not all people of color are criminals,” he said.
During the first month of 2024, there were fewer rapes and murders, compared to 2023. However, robberies, muggings and assaults increased.
Work in education to prevent fires
“We have worked with firefighters to educate about this fire issue. We want to make sure that people know where the emergency exits are, the alarms, that they have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors,” he said.
