Feb 7, 2024 at 10:11 PM Update: 2 hours ago

Mayor Ton Heerts of Apeldoorn declared an emergency order for the entire city on Wednesday evening. He did this because messages had appeared on social media calling for the release of two arrested farmers in Apeldoorn.

The emergency order went into effect at 8:30 p.m. With the emergency order, the police can take action against rioters, close roads, evacuate places and ban gatherings.

The police say they have taken various measures due to “signals of a possible disturbance of public order”. According to Omroep Gelderland there is a lot of police on standby around the police station. Two roads on the outskirts of Apeldoorn are also closed. Hikers and demonstrators have not yet been seen.

The two farmers who are in custody were arrested on Monday evening during protests on the A50. There farmers blocked the road near Beekbergen. The arrested suspects are a 39-year-old man from Klarenbeek and a 35-year-old man from Eerbeek.

Officers arrested the suspects for arson and dumping waste. The fire also contained asbestos. There were about 150 tractors on and along the A50 on Monday evening. The highway ultimately remained closed all night because specialists had to remove asbestos.

Farmers protested across the country

Farmers protested on and around several highways in the country on Monday evening. The fires caused dangerous situations on the highway in several places. In the days before, farmers had already protested in several places, including several provincial houses.

Following the protests, outgoing Minister Dilan Yesilgöz (Justice) held an emergency meeting on Wednesday with the top of the Public Prosecution Service and the police. There they agreed that the police would take faster action against activists who violate the law.

After Monday evening’s protests, the police in Gelderland and Overijssel had already announced that they would scale up. This allowed her to intervene more quickly in the event of unannounced actions.
