NEW YORK — Authorities are searching for the person who abandoned a newborn in a Yonkers hallway a day ago.
Police responded to a multi-family home on Chestnut Street on Tuesday afternoon after receiving a report of an abandoned baby and found the newborn girl in the hallway.
She is believed to be a few days old and was taken to a hospital for further evaluation. Police said Wednesday that the baby is in stable condition.
Yonkers Police Department Chief Joseph Monaco said one of the home’s tenants called police and handed over the baby, who was wrapped in a towel.
According to Monaco, police are not interested in pressing charges at this time, but are investing resources in this case as if it were a potential crime. However, their main priority is to locate the baby’s parents and make sure the mother is safe.
The investigation continues as detectives seek surveillance video and additional information. Police will consult with Child Protective Services to determine the best course of action, Monaco said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Yonkers police.
