Ana Pontón Proposes Creation of Public Insurance for Shellfish Sector Losses and “Decent Incomes”

The national spokesperson for the BNG and candidate for the presidency of the Xunta, Ana Pontón, has proposed creating public insurance to cover losses in the shellfish sector and guarantee “decent incomes.” This is what she declared this Wednesday in the Pontevedra municipality of A Illa de Arousa where she held a meeting with the sea sector, mainly with the shellfish harvesters on foot. Pontón has been the first candidate for the presidency of the Xunta to visit this municipality in which the nationalist formation has experienced growth in the last municipal elections. The BNG went from one to three councilors and is a force of the local government, in a bipartite with the socialists. There she has detailed the three action policies that her political training will carry out in the field of support for production, research and marketing. Pontón sees it as “incomprehensible” that during these 15 years the PPdeG government “left behind” the maritime sector, “fundamental” in the Galician economy since, he added, as a whole it represents 4.8% of the community’s GDP. , 64,000 jobs. “It did not attend to their needs and, clearly, it is also making our maritime sector smaller in this country,” Pontón stated. For this reason, she has committed to being the president who “recovers” the sector, who works “hand in hand” with them and who “launches” a new stage that allows people to “have enough confidence” to know that ” There is going to be a future here.” PUBLIC INSURANCE As far as production is concerned, Pontón has considered it “basic” to start a plan for the regeneration and recovery of the estuaries since, in recent years, they “lost productivity.” “Therefore, we understand that it is essential that the next legislature be the one for the regeneration of our estuaries. A plan in which not only the Xunta, but also the State and the EU funds themselves, have to participate economically,” has pointed out. Furthermore, he believes that production must be supported by betting on hatcheries, by having our own seeds in Galicia, by regulating the emptying of dams and “being able” to guarantee that the people who are dedicated to this activity, when there are problems in the production, “don’t abandon it. For this reason, she has advanced the creation of public insurance to cover losses in the shellfish sector and guarantee a “decent income” to those who work in this field. “Precisely, one of the issues that seems important to us, given the brutal drop in productivity that we experienced this last year, is that there is more aid so that this sector does not become decapitalized, so that the shellfish harvesters do not abandon the activity,” Pontón added. . In this way, she has advanced that they will implement monthly aid to the shellfish harvesters, for productivity losses and will demand that the State “reduce” their social security contributions. CREATE A “LARGE CONSORTIUM” FOR RESEARCH In the field of research, he believes that “it is key” to start a “large consortium” for maritime research in Galicia since, currently, the different centers work “in a uncoordinated.” “We have to do a lot of research on what is happening in the estuaries so that this loss of productivity is recorded and, therefore, we must equip ourselves with greater scientific knowledge about what happens in the estuaries to be able to get the right answers. decisions that we have to make,” explained the BNG spokesperson. The third point of her policy has to do with marketing and is that Galicia has a “highest quality” product; it must be given greater added value and positioned “better” in the different markets. MIXED MARKETING COMPANY In this area, it has proposed creating a mixed marketing company for the products, which are identified “with their own brand” that guarantees that the product that is sold as Galician is “really” the one that comes out of the community’s estuaries. They will continue to bet on designations of origin and that there be the “greatest possible transformation of the product” since it can give it added value and that can ensure that the income that reaches families is “more decent.” DISCONTENT AND CONCERNS OF THE SECTOR For its part, the council of shellfish harvesters on foot has described the Xunta’s aid as “derisory” and as “an alms” for the sector. In this way, they have explained to Europa Press that even if a shellfish harvester is on sick leave but has a valid shellfish harvesting card, she can access aid. “It should not be like this. It should only be the shellfish harvesters who are working. Neither the retired ones, nor those who are on sick leave, nor those who have a temporary disability. That is not normal,” they lamented. Representatives of the ‘bateeiro’ sector have also shown Pontón their concern about the “cheek conflict.” REGENERATION PLAN FOR THE ESTURIES On the other hand, on Tuesday, Pontón visited the town of Ribeira in A Coruña and announced a plan for the regeneration of the estuaries, including the cleaning and collection of plastics 365 days a year, with the aim of recover “lost” productivity. “Galicia is a fishing and shellfish nation and we want it to remain that way, and that involves the comprehensive cleaning of our estuaries, both for environmental reasons and for the generation of wealth and employment,” he proclaimed.
