Obesity in Indonesia Increases: Bariatric Surgery as a Solution – Expert Advice

TRIBUNJABAR.ID, BANDUNG – Changes in lifestyle and unhealthy eating patterns are causing obesity to increase in Indonesia.

Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono said that in 2019 the obesity rate in Indonesia was around 14 percent and has now increased to 25-26.

Obesity is also a problem that needs to be treated immediately, one of which is by performing bariatric surgery.

Digestive Surgery Consultant Surgeon, Dr. Dr. Reno Rudiman MSc, Sp.B., SubSp.BD(K), FICS, FCSI explained that bariatric surgery is a type of surgical procedure whose aim is to treat obesity and all its accompanying diseases.

Through this bariatric surgery, said Doctor Reno, the patient will feel less hungry.

This is because in bariatric surgery there is a hunger sensor in the stomach which will be activated.

“So the patient can only eat very little food. Patients who undergo this operation will not feel hungry because the sensor has been removed,” Doctor Reno when met at Mayapada Hospital Bandung, Jalan Buah Batu No. 5, Batununggal, Wednesday (7/ 2/2024).

Doctor Reno said that bariatric surgery has been around since the 1950s, at which time the world of surgery was trying to shorten the intestines, but it was not popular because there were not many people suffering from obesity.

Currently, the trend of obesity sufferers is increasing, and in 1994, laparoscopic bariatric surgery began to appear.

“This is an operation to cut the stomach and intestines using sophisticated and minimally invasive equipment. The process takes 2-3 hours and the patient can go home after 2-3 days,” he said.

Through this operation, the patient’s metabolism will improve, and the method does not remove body fat.

“The size of the stomach and intestines will be modified so that the body’s food metabolism factory becomes smaller,” he said.

Bariatric surgery is carried out with the aim of improving metabolism, so that weight is reduced and complaints related to obesity are reduced.

Doctor Reno said there are several conditions where a person must undergo bariatric surgery because it is accompanied by comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, stomach acid disorders, GERD, knee pain because they cannot walk due to carrying excessive body weight.
