The interparliamentary meeting offers the opportunity to exchange views at parliamentary level on the current status of relations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU) and in particular on the package approach with which the open points in the overall bilateral relations are to be addressed. Under the joint chairmanship of National Councilor Thomas Aeschi (SVP, ZG), President of the EFTA/EU Delegation, and MEP Andreas Schwab (EPP, Germany), Chairman of the DEEA Delegation, the parliamentarians will be in the presence of representatives The federal administration and the EU Commission will discuss, among other things, the “common understanding” developed by the negotiating parties.
Due to the ongoing discussions in Switzerland regarding the consultation on the draft negotiating mandate, representatives of important interest groups were also invited to take part in the interparliamentary meeting. The Secretary General of the Conference of Cantonal Governments, Roland Mayer, the Chief Economist of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions, Daniel Lampart, and the Head of Foreign Trade at Economiesuisse, Jan Atteslander, will present the positions of their organizations in order to provide an insight into the areas of domestic political tension.
In addition, MEP Andreas Schwab and Swiss Ambassador to the EU Rita Adam will discuss the upcoming European elections in June 2024 and their possible impact on Swiss-EU relations.
The Swiss Federal Assembly will be represented at the interparliamentary meeting by delegation president Thomas Aeschi (SVP, ZG), vice president Damian Müller (FDP, LU), National Council President Eric Nussbaumer (SP, BL), National Councilor Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (Die Mitte, BL), National Council Nicolas Walder (Greens, GE) as well as the state councilors Hannes Germann (SVP, SH), Benedikt Würth (Die Mitte, SG) and Carlo Sommaruga (SP, GE) will be represented. Taking part from the European Parliament are MEPs Andreas Schwab (EPP, Germany), Christophe Grudler (Renew, France), Zdzisław Krasnodębski (ECR, Poland) and Lukas Mandl (EPP, Austria).
