Jumbo Supermarket Takes Extra Measures to Combat Shoplifting, Including AI Surveillance and Stricter Checks – 2021 Update

Jumbo will take additional measures in the coming weeks to tackle shoplifting. For example, there will be more and clearly visible camera surveillance and there will be more and smarter random checks at self-checkouts. There will also be striking signs in all stores stating that customers must pay for all groceries and that there will be stricter checks for theft.

At the beginning of this year, Jumbo announced that more than 100 million euros are stolen from its supermarkets every year. The company is already conducting a trial in which extra employees or security guards are deployed in a number of stores, with stricter random checks at self-checkouts. There are also more checks on receipts and bags.

There are already life-size cardboard police officers in stores where shoplifters are warned of a fine of 180 euros.

Artificial intelligence
Jumbo is also testing new software that uses artificial intelligence to recognize deviating customer behavior in the store. These trials are expected to last three months. If these tests are successful, they will be introduced nationally.

Supermarket expert Paul Moers previously explained that there is more theft due to, among other things, high prices and self-checkouts: “The Netherlands has 1 million poor people. If groceries become 32 percent more expensive in two years, people are more inclined to steal.”

The theft does not always happen consciously, according to Moers. “People sometimes do not realize that a product is not being scanned. Not all customers immediately notice that the self-checkout has not beeped for every message.”
