It has been 13 years since the snowy night of January 27, when Mārtiņš Freimanis (1977-2011), the beloved composer, poet, actor and founder of the group “Tumsa”, passed away. Today, February 7, he would have turned 47 years old.
Mārtiņš had a fantastic talent to see qualities in people that they themselves did not realize, but which really existed. His sensitive perception was also felt by the singer Ralf Eiland, who mentions Freimani as the first most important person in his life – Mārtiņš gave a lot, never asking for anything in return.
Actress Zane Vadņiņa remembers love through her stomach, thanks to Freimans’ cooking skills. She really liked filming with Mārtiņas in the TV series “UgunsGreks”, because he was noticed to satisfy the hunger of the actress with self-made buns on the set. Zane has never eaten anything so delicious.
In November of last year, driven by the unrest, musician and show host Lauris Reiniks went to the Freimanis memorial site in Misiņkalns cemetery in Aizputė: “I saw Mārtiņas in a dream, and he was angry in it. They usually say that if the dead appear in dreams, you should go to their graves.”
On Saturday, February 10, at 21:00 at the “Wiktorija” culture house, the concert story of Mārtiņš Freimaņi’s first songs “I am fine” will take place, while after it the celebration will continue with being together, listening and singing along to Mārtiņš’s songs in recordings, as well as performed by friends.
The concert story consists of 12 songs of the musician, unknown to a wider audience, which he created in the nineties while studying at Aizpute secondary school. “In my opinion, the concert story “I am fine” or Mārtiņš Freimanis before “Darkness” is a blessed work. Almost an archaeological excavation, which is not only valuable as a find, as evidence of the beginning of a bright talent, but as a new work of art, which, after undergoing thorough restoration process, gained its true value,” music producer and musician Guntars Račs evaluates the concert story.
By completely preserving the music and lyrics of the songs created by Mārtiņš Freimaņas, each song was searched for and found its own unique sound, so that the songs acquired not only a historically important meaning, but also a wider, modern sound, looking to reveal what was encoded in the songs – the message of one young man to the world.
The songs are supplemented with the narration of the author and director of the idea of this project – Maijas Kalniņas, friend and schoolmate of Mārtiņš Freimaņas – from the time when the songs performed in the concert story were written.
The arrangements of the songs and their sounds were searched for, created and performed by a team of musicians specially created for this project: Normunds Kalniņš, Ieva Tālberga, Roberts Dinters, Zanda Strausa, Raitis Eleris, Māris Zīlmanis, Kaspars Boroduško and Maija Kalniņa.
The concert story “I am fine” premiered at the Wiktorija culture house in November 2021. The recording of these songs has just been completed and they will soon be available on a music album.
Maija Kalniņa received the Liepāja Culture of the Year Award 2021 for creating this concert story.
