Nintendo has announced its impressive sales figures for the third quarter of its current fiscal year, revealing that the popular Nintendo Switch console has reached a remarkable milestone of selling 139.36 million units as of December 31. This outstanding number includes sales for all variations of the console, including the Nintendo Switch, Lite, and OLED models.
During the period from October 1 to December 31, Nintendo managed to sell an impressive 6.9 million units. However, these sales figures were down by 7.8% when compared to the same period in the previous year, where they sold a staggering 13.74 million units from April 1 to December 31.
As for the bestselling titles for the Nintendo Switch, the list is dominated by some of the most beloved franchises in gaming history. Topping the charts is “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,” which has sold an impressive 60.58 million copies. Following closely behind is “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” with 44.79 million copies sold, and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” with 33.67 million copies sold.
Other notable titles include “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” with 31.61 million copies sold, “Super Mario Odyssey” with 27.65 million copies sold, and “Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield” with 26.17 million copies sold.
However, the standout performer among these titles is the recently released “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” game for the Nintendo Switch. Since its launch on October 20, this highly anticipated game has already sold an impressive 11.96 million units, solidifying its place as a fan-favorite.
In terms of overall sales, Nintendo has reported a staggering 1,394.7 billion yen (approximately US$9.5 million) for the first three quarters of the fiscal year. What’s even more impressive is that sales outside of Japan accounted for a significant 78.7% of this total, highlighting the global appeal of Nintendo’s products.
With these remarkable sales figures, the Nintendo Switch has now surpassed Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Game Boy/Game Boy Color to become the third best-selling console of all time as of the end of 2022. It now sits behind only the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS in terms of lifetime sales.
The success of the Nintendo Switch and its lineup of popular games is a testament to Nintendo’s ability to captivate players of all ages. With its innovative hybrid design, allowing players to seamlessly switch between handheld and console gaming, the Nintendo Switch has become a staple in the gaming industry.
As we look ahead to the future, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo continues to innovate and captivate its audience. With a strong lineup of upcoming games and the highly anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch OLED model, it seems that Nintendo’s success is set to continue for years to come.
