Green Party Spokesperson Condemns Extent of Farmers’ Protests Blockades

The domestic and legal policy spokesman for the parliamentary group of ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS, Michael Labetzke, criticizes the extent of the blockades in the recent farmers’ protests. In Bremerhaven, the port operations with tractors were largely paralyzed. The protesters were hardly willing to cooperate with the police and even resisted them and attacked their barriers. Labetzke calls for de-escalation and consideration when selecting the blockade targets: “Blockades of critical infrastructure such as our ports go too far. There needs to be a calming down in the currently charged situation instead of escalating further: The federal government has already gone a long way towards helping farmers in their resistance to subsidy cuts. An almost complete blockade of the ports like last weekend cannot be tolerated by the security authorities. We need the ports for imports and exports and must not forget that this is critical infrastructure (KRITIS) that requires special protection.”

This also applies to other targets of the blockades. In the past few days in northern Germany, for example, the access roads to the Jade Weser Port in Wilhelmshaven, media companies such as the NDR radio station in Hanover and a press distribution center in Hamburg as well as a logistics center for food supplies and border crossings in Brandenburg were blocked. These actions, some of which were not registered, are also controversial in agriculture and have been widely criticized – there was sharp criticism, for example, from the rural people of Lower Saxony, from the farmers’ association “Land creates connection” and also representatives of the farmers’ association. “In this respect, it would also be necessary to clarify who is actually behind these actions. It is now often difficult to see any connection with the concerns of farmers. The ports are the wrong recipient of the blockades. Anyone who cites reliable domestic supplies as the reason and goal of their protests cannot exactly paralyze them. There must be no blockage of the lifelines of the German economy and society. This is not only a nuisance for the employees affected, but would also endanger social interaction and damage companies in the long term – we cannot allow that,” said Labetzke.
