The early risers among the fools and parade visitors should pack an umbrella on Thursday just to be on the safe side. Because the peak phase of Fasnet in Baden-Württemberg starts wet.
It could still rain across the country in the morning and afternoon of “Dirty Thursday,” according to the German Weather Service (DWD). From the afternoon onwards it will become increasingly drier in the south and the rain will move towards the north of the country, said a meteorologist. It could rain there until the evening.
DWD warns of continuous rain in the Black Forest
Carnival fans in the Black Forest and between Ostalb and Odenwald have to be prepared for a lot of wetness. For these areas, the DWD warns of continuous rain from Wednesday 6 a.m. to Friday 12 p.m., especially in traffic jams. Up to 50 liters of rain per square meter can fall there in 48 to 54 hours.
Where the precipitation decreases, it usually remains very cloudy. At most, fools in Upper Swabia can enjoy one or two hours of sun.
In Stuttgart the temperatures are expected to reach 14 degrees
At least viewers and haters don’t have to worry about clammy fingers. “The fools won’t freeze,” said the DWD meteorologist. Temperatures will remain in double digits everywhere on Thursday. In Stuttgart it is around 14 degrees, in the Rhine Valley up to 16 degrees, in the north 10 to 11 degrees.
There may still be a few gusts in the mountainous region on Thursday, but otherwise the DWD does not expect any significant wind that could endanger events.
Weiberfasnet, Gumpendonnerstag or Schmotziger Thursday?
The Thursday before Ash Wednesday is called very differently in the country: Weiberfasnet, Gumpendonnerstag or Schmotziger Thursday. It is considered the start of the hot phase of the Swabian-Alemannic carnival and the street carnival.
Many fools then parade through the cities or symbolically take power in the municipalities by storming town halls.
