Former Governor and Senator José Alperovich on Trial for Sexual Abuse: A Significant Milestone in the Case

This Monday the trial began of José Alperovich, former governor and senator of Tucumán, accused of nine acts of aggravated sexual abuse against a niece. Pablo Rovatti, plaintiff in the case, assured that beyond the sentence, it is already “an important milestone” that the case has reached this stage of oral debate because it shows that “our society no longer tolerates” these types of events. whatever its author.

Rovatti exercises legal representation of the victim, by his initials MFL, within the framework of the Legal Assistance and Sponsorship Program for Victims of Crime of the Public Ministry of Defense. The lawyer positively valued how justice and the current social context advanced the case, regardless of the accused. “A few decades ago, I don’t know what fate this case would have had,” said Rovatti.

Regarding the solidity of the case, he was optimistic when stating that it is “a very solid case”, which for the plaintiff lawyer will be demonstrated in the upcoming hearings.

In addition, Rovatti predicted that “the sentencing could be in August or September” because there are testimonial hearings scheduled until July. He warned, however, regarding the resolution time that the court requires beyond the arguments of the parties.

“First of all, it is very important for the victim herself, who has the opportunity to be heard after having suffered this for many months in a very asymmetrical context of power, because her attacker was a national senator, he had been governor for more than a decade. and he had a family bond with her,” Rovatti said.

“Alperovich took advantage of all this – according to our accusation and the prosecution – to start these abuses and maintain them over time,” added the lawyer.

The actions of Justice in the Alperovich case

Regarding the response of Justice to the case, Rovatti highlighted “both the role of prosecutor Sandro Abraldes and that of judge José María Ramos Padilla” for having given the complainant “extremely respectful treatment.” She exemplified her statements in accepting the victim’s request, that the accused not be present in the courtroom when she gives testimony, on behalf of the officials.

“It is a restorative instance, to some extent, for the victim because although no one erases what he had to experience, the case came to trial and that is important,” Pablo Rovatti stressed.

“On the other hand, we cannot ignore that, when the case acquires significance because the accused is a public figure, the system of administration of justice is legitimized as long as it is demonstrated that the courts act independently of whether it is a former governor or senator, a teacher, a worker or merchant. And particularly this type of crime is no longer tolerated, neither by those who have a lot of power, nor by those who have less,” he added.

How was the start of the trial of the former governor of Tucumán

With the statement of the accused and the victim, the trial of José Alperovich began this Monday in TOC No. 29 of the City of Buenos Aires.

During the inaugural hearing, the accusations of both the complaint and the Prosecutor’s Office were read, which coincided almost point by point, after which Judge Ramos Padilla offered the floor to the accused who took the opportunity to elliptically and briefly proclaim his innocence, after which was read out during the investigation during the investigation.

Subsequently, the room was cleared for the victim to give testimony, which lasted for six hours.

“It was a long statement, at times mobilizing for the victim for having had to return to situations of verbal and psychological violence, as well as sexual violence, that occurred from the end of 2017 to May 2019, which is when she found the courage to face it. and tell him that he was not going to work with him anymore because what he was doing to him was ruining his life. She told all this, answered questions, gave all the details we asked for. In my opinion it was a very solid, detailed, clear and forceful story,” concluded the plaintiff lawyer.

The debate will continue on February 15 and, although it is not defined which witnesses will testify that day, it is expected that in the coming days “people from the victim’s inner circle”, the “people who were part of the campaign team” will do so. ” by Alperovich in 2017 and the professionals of the forensic medical team who performed the psychological tests on the victim.
