Decision on Nordic pipeline sabotage investigation to be made by Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist

German media are reporting today that the prosecutor in charge, Mats Ljungqvist, apparently wants to drop the proceedings and Swedish authorities are believed to have been unable to identify any specific suspects in their jurisdiction.

Ljungkvist told the Swedish newspaper “Expressen” on Monday that he plans to make a decision in this case in the next few days. Prosecutors said today that a decision would likely be made on Wednesday, but did not say what it would be.

Ljungqvist’s decision will only affect the Swedish investigation. It will continue in Germany, and the media reports that the German authorities could even benefit from this Swedish move, as the Swedes could allow Germany access to the evidence they have managed to gather after the investigation is closed.

On September 26, 2022, several explosions occurred in the Baltic Sea, damaging both “Nord Stream” pipelines and causing four leaks. In connection with the incident, investigations were started in Sweden, Germany and Denmark. In November 2022, Ljungkvist confirmed the initial suspicions that sabotage had taken place. In the analyses, the remains of explosives were found on several foreign objects, the prosecutor announced at the time.

In the summer of 2023, in a joint letter addressed to the UN Security Council, the UN embassies in Germany, Denmark and Sweden stated that investigators had also discovered traces of explosives on the yacht, which was probably used in sabotage.
