[周刊王CTWANT] The Philippine authorities stated on the 5th that heavy rains caused disasters in many southern provinces, killing at least 20 people, affecting more than 210,000 families, and 810,000 people.
According to “Gulf News”, data from the Philippine National Disaster Agency show that from last month to February 2, the monsoon coupled with the impact of low pressure brought heavy rains to southern Mindanao, causing floods and landslides. It is understood that more than 210,000 families have been affected and 810,000 people in 564 villages have been displaced. Rescue workers said 13 people were killed and two were missing in Davao Oro province, while seven people died in neighboring Davao del Norte province and 85,000 people were forced to evacuate to evacuation centers.

Environmental groups say flooding occurs because of declining forest cover, expanding land areas and inadequate urban drainage planning. It is reported that the figure of 20 deaths is only a preliminary estimate, and the details are awaiting confirmation by the committee. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration noted that the monsoon will affect northern Luzon and eastern Visayas and Mindanao, with possible flash floods and landslides. The agency also warned of rough surf in coastal areas.
Armed Forces of the Philippines Commander-in-Chief Romeo Brawner Jr. said the military has launched humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in southeastern Mindanao, where floods have posed major challenges. Brauner said Filipino soldiers deserve recognition for their dedication in providing aid to their compatriots during disasters.
According to Reuters, floods and landslides occurred in the southern Philippines in mid-January, killing 18 people. The Philippines is an archipelago country composed of more than 7,600 islands. Floods and landslides are frequent, and 20 typhoons hit each year.
