Actor Jonathan Majors’ Sentencing Postponed as Attorneys File Motion to Set Aside Conviction
The sentencing of actor Jonathan Majors has been postponed until April after his attorneys filed a motion to set aside his conviction. Majors, 34, was found guilty by a jury of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend last year. The Manhattan district attorney’s office has until March 5 to respond to the defense motion, and the sentencing has been rescheduled for April 8.
Majors appeared virtually before a Manhattan criminal court judge wearing a tan crewneck sweater. Judge Michael Gaffey announced that the case would not proceed with sentencing on that day due to the defense’s motion. Majors was convicted of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment but was acquitted of two other counts of assault and aggravated harassment in a split verdict following a trial in December 2023.
The charges against Majors stem from an altercation with his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, in a for-hire SUV in New York City in March 2023. The jury’s mixed verdict indicates that they believed Majors recklessly assaulted Jabbari but did not do so intentionally. According to testimony from the trial, the altercation began when Jabbari saw a text message from another woman on Majors’ phone. She tried to grab the phone, and Majors allegedly pulled her hand behind her back while holding the phone in her other hand.
Jabbari described the incident in court, stating that it felt like Majors was twisting her arm and hand, causing her pain. Prosecutors presented photos taken by police of Jabbari’s injuries, including a fractured finger, a cut to her ear, and a bruised and swollen finger. Majors denied causing those injuries during an interview with ABC News Live’s Linsey Davis, claiming that Jabbari came on top of him, squeezed his face, and slapped him.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Majors had subjected Jabbari to a manipulative pattern of psychological and physical abuse leading up to the SUV incident. Majors was arrested in March 2023 after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute. He subsequently filed a cross-complaint against Jabbari, alleging that he was the one assaulted. Jabbari was arrested in October 2023 on multiple charges but was not prosecuted due to a lack of prosecutorial merit.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Majors expressed shock and fear upon hearing the guilty verdict. He questioned how it was possible based on the evidence presented during the trial. However, Jabbari’s attorney criticized Majors for not taking accountability for his actions and stated that his lack of remorse should impact the sentencing decisions.
Jonathan Majors gained recognition for his role as Kang in several Marvel films and TV shows, including the Disney+ series “Loki.” However, following his conviction, Marvel decided to drop him from future productions as the Marvel villain. Majors was set to reprise his role in “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” scheduled for release in 2026.
The sentencing postponement and the motion to set aside the conviction have added further twists to Jonathan Majors’ legal battle. As the court awaits the response from the Manhattan district attorney’s office, the actor’s future in the entertainment industry remains uncertain.
