Smartphone Software Updates: Is 7 Years Really Necessary?

  • OnePlus boss believes 7 years of updates for phones is not a good idea
  • He compares a 7-year-old phone to old food and says the user experience won’t be ideal anyway

Samsung took a very innovative approach to software updates with the Galaxy S24 series and pretty much blew the competition away. We are not talking about the generative AI function, but about the long 7-year software support. However, it cannot be expected that all manufacturers will repeat it after him.

OnePlus: 7 years of updates makes no sense

A OnePlus representative, specifically Chief Operating Officer and President Kinder Liu, commented on the frequency and amount of updates. He immediately stated that the expected new OnePlus 12, which will be heading to the Czech market in a few days, will not offer such a long-lasting software support.

“Simply offering longer support with software updates makes no sense at all. Not only long-term software updates are important to users, but also the smoothness of the phone’s user interface.” said Liu in an interview with the server Tom’s Guide.

OnePlus’ chief operating officer says his company is much more focused on the overall user experience. At the same time, he refuses to accept that even after 7 years the user experience from one and the same phone will be the same. After all, take a look back at the flagship phones of 7 years ago. Would you like to use iPhone X or Galaxy S8 today?

Phone as a sandwich?

To demonstrate his conviction, Liu chose a rather unorthodox metaphor: “Think of your phone as a sandwich. Some manufacturers claim that the filling of their sandwich – the phone’s software – will still be edible in 7 years. But what they don’t tell you is that the bread in the sandwich—the user experience—can be moldy after four years. At that point the 7 year support doesn’t matter because the rest of the phone experience is horrible.”

On the other hand, Samsung is the first to come up with such extreme software support. Apple usually offers 5 years of software updates. OnePlus is trying to get closer to this direction, with the OnePlus 12 it wants to guarantee 4-5 years of security updates and at least 4 major updates of the Android system.
