On July 4, 1997, a small, flat robot landed on the surface of Mars and became the first wheeled vehicle to explore another planet. Since then, the Mars rover fleet has followed in Sojourner’s footsteps and gotten bigger, better, and more autonomous by the year.
Sojourner was followed by Spirit and Opportunity, both of which landed on Mars in 2004. Curiosity, which is still exploring the dusty Martian terrain, landed in 2012, and finally, the newest addition to the rover family, Perseverance landed in 2021.
