China Accuses US of Escalating Conflict in Middle East with Retaliatory Attacks in Iraq and Syria

New York (dpa) – China has accused the United States of further escalating the conflict in the Middle East with retaliatory attacks in Iraq and Syria.

The US’s actions in the region are reinforcing the “vicious circle of violence and counter-violence,” said Chinese representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, as state television reported. The People’s Republic calls on the parties involved to remain calm, respect the territorial integrity of the countries and “stop illegal military operations”.

A few days ago, the US military carried out air strikes on more than 85 targets in Syria and Iraq. According to US information, the target was command centers, intelligence sites and weapons depots that were used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and militias affiliated with them. The United States responded to an attack by pro-Iranian militias on January 28 in Jordan that killed three US soldiers and injured numerous others.

The Chinese government, which maintains good relations in the region with Iran, for example, wants to position itself externally neutral in the Middle East conflict and is calling for a ceasefire and the protection of civilians and shipping routes. However, Washington demands that China use its influence in the region, for example to stop arms deliveries to the Houthis.
