Paris Referendum Results and Implications for Urban SUVs Parking Fees

In the referendum “More or less urban SUVs in Paris?” according to the preliminary results, less than 6% of eligible voters participated

54% supported the proposal, while 45.5% were against it.

Participants in the referendum had to answer the question whether the fee for parking city SUVs should be increased from six to 18 euros per hour in the center of Paris and from four to 12 euros per hour in the suburbs.

The higher fee will apply to internal combustion engine cars and hybrid cars weighing more than 1.6 tons, as well as electric cars weighing more than two tons.

This norm is not intended to apply to people living or working in Paris, to taxi drivers, traders and disabled people.

As indicated by the mayor of Paris, Anna Hidalgo, who represents the socialists, the bigger the car, the more pollution it produces.

During Idalgo’s tenure, many streets in Paris, including both banks of the Seine, were closed to traffic and turned into pedestrian streets. In an effort to reduce the amount of emissions created by cars, many bicycle paths have also been built.

Mary also points out that large SUVs take up more space in public space and are more dangerous for pedestrians.

However, the drivers’ club “Mobilite” stands against this plan, which points out that the attribution of the class of urban off-road vehicles to vehicles is only a marketing trick that has no real content.

The new rules will not apply to small city SUVs, but will apply to family cars and pickup trucks used for economic purposes.

Opposition conservatives are also against Hidalgo’s plan, who point to the mayor’s efforts to manipulate the public.
