A convicted child sex offender was shot to death allegedly by a Texas man who posed as a minor on a messaging app.reported local authorities.
The suspect, identified as James Spencer III, 24, told police he did it because he thought authorities were ineffective at keeping pedophiles in jail.
Spencer communicated with Sean Connery Showers, 37, on the Kik application, where he pretended to be a minor. The two agreed to meet on May 29, 2023, and some of his messages had a sexual tone, ABC13 reported.
When Showers arrived at the agreed location, a vehicle stopped next to him and the driver fired several bursts of bullets “similar to those from an automatic” at him and fled at full speed. Showers’ body was found by another driver in a ditch in a residential area.
“Spencer and Showers were in contact through a social media application,” noted 179th District Court Chief Prosecutor Rehman Merchant. “The conversations were sexual in nature. The agents believe that they met in that park to have sexual relations.”
Likewise, Merchant stated that Spencer used some of the messages to get Showers to make confessions about his past.
Spencer was arrested last Wednesday by the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force. He is being held in the Harris County Jail on a charge of first-degree felony murder, with bail set at $25,000. according to prison records.
According to reports, Showers had a history of sexual crimes. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to federal possession of child pornography and was sentenced to 30 months in prison. He was also registered as a sex offender.
